CAN/DID Preview: LGBTQ+ Community Members

With LGBTQ+ Pride Month coming up in June, the CAN/DID Inclusion Series will release new videos to honor and celebrate the De Anza LGBTQ+ community. Visit deanza.edu/candid to watch a preview of these new episodes. Look for more videos featuring our De Anza LGBTQ+ community to be released soon.
This sneak peak also comes ahead of the annual Queer and Now conference, which will be held online this Monday, May 23.
2022 Queer and Now Conference – Let's Play!

Layshia Clarendon was leading scorer for the Cal Golden Bears in college and was named a WNBA All-Star in 2017. Three years later, they became the first out trans and nonbinary player in WNBA history. A regular commentator for the Pac-12 Network, as well as vice president of the WNBA players' association, Layshia is also a noted advocate, speaker and writer on social issues.
Queer and Now is an annual conference at De Anza that focuses on the larger and local LGBTQ+ community, along with student success, equity, intersectionality and social justice concerns. The theme this year is focused on intersectional identities, inclusive communities and the politics of play.
Make sure to also mark your calendar for Lavender Graduation, an annual celebration of De Anza LGBTQ+ graduates to honor their resilience and accomplishments. The event will be held on Tuesday, June 14, from 6-7:30 p.m. on the Visual and Performing Arts Center patio. Alysa Cisneros, De Anza alum and Sunnyvale vice mayor, will be the keynote speaker. CAN/DID is a multimedia series that examines equity and social justice issues – with the goal of building community – by drawing on the knowledge and experiences of De Anza College students, faculty and staff. Previous videos have explored perspectives on the Black Lives Matter movement, provided context and strategies for countering anti-Asian racism and celebrated De Anza's unique Intercultural Studies programs.
The series will continue to address major issues with future installments focusing on topics that are important to De Anza's AAPI, Latinx and LGBTQ+ communities, and to all of us.
CAN/DID is produced by the multimedia team and others in De Anza’s Office of Communications, in consultation with the Office of Equity, Social Justice and Multicultural Education, college affinity groups, and others.
