From the President
In Memory of Don Barnett
Feb. 4, 2025
Dear Colleagues,
I am sorry to share the sad news about the recent passing of Donald Barnett, a former Language Arts faculty member and division dean at De Anza for nearly 30 years. Don, who was known for his intelligence, good humor and dedication to our students, died on Jan. 26 at the age of 86. A native of Illinois, Don earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan. After moving to California, he taught and served as an administrator at De Anza from 1968-1997.
In addition to his work, Don was active with the Fun Times Singers, a community choral group, and the Unity Spiritual Center of San José. I’m told he also enjoyed driving his red Mustang convertible!
In honor of Don and if inclined, donations can be made to the Fun Times Singers or Unity Spiritual Center.
As a college, we extend our condolences and best wishes to Don’s family, friends and former colleagues. Although he retired from De Anza College some years ago, Don’s passing is a reminder that our campus community shares a longstanding commitment to serving our students, and Don most assuredly contributed to the mission of our college.
In Service,
Omar
