Help is Available
If You’re Feeling Anxious About the Middle East
If you are feeling stressed or anxious about recent events in Israel and Gaza, there is help available to you. Students can contact De Anza’s Mental Health and Wellness Center to request individual counseling, or use TimelyCare to speak with a mental health professional online, any time, for free.
Spotlight
Filipinx American History Month
October is Filipinx American History Month! You can join the celebration by attending the first ever Kapuso Conference and Pistahan Gathering at De Anza. Stop by Conference Rooms A & B this Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m.- 7 p.m. for workshops, information about studying abroad in the Philippines, a traditional tinikling dance and a pistahan welcoming high school students. You can also attend the MOMENTUM series event: Investing In You – Our Future with guest speaker Ryan Letada, CEO of NextDayBetter, at noon on the same day.
The conference is sponsored by the Office of Equity, Division of Social Sciences and Humanities, International Students Program, Asian American Studies, APASA, De Anza Student Government (DASG), PAWIS, Malaya, KAWAYAN and IMPACT AAPI. CAN/DID Inclusion Series: Raza Heritage Month
We’re extending our celebration of Raza Heritage Month – which normally runs from Sept. 15-Oct. 15. The Office of Communications is releasing new additions to the CAN/DID Inclusion series, specifically from the perspective of students, faculty and staff on what it means to be Latinx. You can view the stories on the CAN/DID website and on the college's social media accounts.
Diwali: Festival of Lights Is Oct. 25
Celebrate Diwali at De Anza on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in the Sunken Garden! Students, faculty and staff are invited to join this celebration and experience the warmth of community with activities, performances and food! Diwali is the annual festival of lights celebrated in South Asia and around the world. It represents the spiritual victory of light over darkness and also commemorates different historical events. Historically Black Colleges and Universities Caravan
De Anza College has been selected as one of the host sites for the California Community College Transfer Guarantee to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Caravan this fall. The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Main Quad. Some of the event activities will include representative visits from HBCU partner institutions, information about scholarships – like the Hoffman Agency HBCU Scholarship, workshops, potential on-site admissions, prizes, music and more. Foothill-De Anza Police Department Events
The Foothill-De Anza Police Department will present free Run Hide Defend emergency preparedness training this fall. This two-hour session is for Foothill-De Anza students, faculty, and staff. A brief overview of campus safety awareness and responses to active assailants will be covered. The virtual session will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 7. District police will also host a community forum on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Participants will be able to discuss complex issues, address concerns and learn about the latest projects and programs. Recognition Spotlight
De Anza Nursing Program Success Rate
De Anza Nursing students had a first-time pass rate of 100% on the latest state Board of Registered Nursing NCLEX licensing exams, according to results released this month. In addition to those students who were taking the test for the first time, a majority of students who were retaking the test also passed, bringing the program's overall pass rate to 94.2%.
De Anza Planetarium in the News
The De Anza Planetarium was featured in a story about the annular eclipse on KPIX. Planetarium Director Toshi Komatsu and Astronomy instructor Geoff Mathews from Foothill College were both featured in a video segment you can view on YouTube.
Student Journalists Shine in Regional Competition
Students in the Journalism program took home an impressive 27 awards after attending the Journalism Association of Community Colleges NorCal Conference on Oct. 14 at San Francisco State University. The De Anza students won 24 awards for work published over the past three quarters, and three more awards for "on-the-spot" contests held on the day of the conference. You can view the full list of winners on the Awards and Achievements website. Congratulations to these Journalism students and faculty adviser Farideh Dada!
Teng Featured in De Young Exhibition
Lisa Teng, part-time Photography instructor, was selected to showcase her photograph, “The Landscape Within” at the de Young Open. The annual exhibit, which was first launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, curates work by some of the best artists across the Bay Area. You can see her work next to this paragraph or by attending the exhibit, which runs from Sept. 30 to Jan. 7 (click on the photo to view in full size).
