Help is Available

If You’re Feeling Anxious About the Middle East

If you are feeling stressed or anxious about recent events in Israel and Gaza, there is help available to you. Students can contact De Anza’s Mental Health and Wellness Center to request individual counseling, or use TimelyCare to speak with a mental health professional online, any time, for free.

Silicon Valley Reads 2024

A Greener Tomorrow Starts TodayDe Anza will once again host the kickoff for the upcoming Silicon Valley Reads campaign, with a special event this winter in the VPAC. Silicon Valley Reads is a community reading campaign that will include more than 100 free events in 2024, focusing on a selection of featured books that relate to the year's chosen theme: “A Greener Tomorrow Starts Today.”

Featured books will include “All We Can Save” edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine K. Wilkinson, “One Green Thing” by Heather White and “The Light Place” by Lily Brooks-Dalton. These authors will visit De Anza for the kickoff, which will be open free to the public. You can find more information on the Silicon Valley Reads website.

Diwali: Festival of Lights Is Oct. 25

Celebrate Diwali at De Anza on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in the Sunken Garden! Students, faculty and staff are invited to join this celebration and experience the warmth of community with activities, performances and food! Diwali is the annual festival of lights celebrated in South Asia and around the world. It represents the spiritual victory of light over darkness and also commemorates different historical events. Historically Black Colleges and Universities Caravan

HBCU-CCC Transfer GuaranteeDe Anza College has been selected as one of the host sites for the California Community College Transfer Guarantee to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Caravan this fall. The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Main Quad. Some of the event activities will include representative visits from HBCU partner institutions, information about scholarships – like the Hoffman Agency HBCU Scholarship, workshops, potential on-site admissions, prizes, music and more. Equity in Mental Health on Campus

De Anza is partnering with the Steve Fund to facilitate a virtual listening session as part of the Equity in Mental Health on Campus initiative. Students of color are invited to discuss their perceptions of campus resources at the virtual session on Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 4-5 p.m. Please register in advance and email emhc@stevefund.org with any questions.

Stevens Creek Corridor Vision Study

Want to have your say on the future of Stevens Creek Boulevard? The Stevens Creek Corridor Vision Study is a multi-jurisdictional effort to create a vision for the future of this health, education, tech, shopping and housing corridor that extends through several cities of Silicon Valley. As part of this effort, De Anza students and employees are invited to take an online survey that will provide input on challenges and improvements for the corridor, including recommendations on how to direct transportation investment from San José, Santa Clara, Cupertino, the county and VTA.

Foothill-De Anza Police Department Events

The Foothill-De Anza Police Department will present free Run Hide Defend emergency preparedness training this fall. This two-hour session is for Foothill-De Anza students, faculty, and staff. A brief overview of campus safety awareness and responses to active assailants will be covered. The virtual session will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 7. District police will also host a community forum on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Participants will be able to discuss complex issues, address concerns and learn about the latest projects and programs. Instructors Recognized by USC Race and Equity Center

English instructor Karen Chow is featured in a new online publication of the USC Race and Equity Center, which showcases race-conscious leadership in a graphic novel format. Chow, along with Foothill instructor Dolores Davison, are both featured in the latest issue, “Avenging for Equity.”

They were recognized for their work in "cultivating inclusive excellence and enacting culturally affirming learning for students.” You can view the illustrated brief on the USC Race and Equity Center’s website.
