Village Centers Anniversary Celebration Is Feb. 13

Celebrate the anniversary of the Village Centers on Tuesday, Feb. 13, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. There will be a special event every hour, each hosted by a different center. Activities will include karaoke, networking, cookie decorating and more! You can stop by for snacks and a chance to win a Village T-shirt or the grand prize
– a graduation or family photo session. The celebration is co-sponsored by De Anza

DASG Executive Officer Applications Are Due
The filing period is now open for anyone interested in running for an executive officer position (president, vice president or committee chairs) in the De Anza Student Government (DASG) or for student trustee. The application period will close next Monday, Feb. 5, at 4 p.m. You can find more information and the application on the DASG website. Voting will begin Monday, Feb. 26, and end Friday, March 8, at 4 p.m.
Flea Market this Saturday in Parking Lots A & B
The monthly DASG Flea Market is this Saturday, Feb. 3, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in Parking Lots A & B – rain or shine. You can find a variety
of antiques, plants, handcrafted items, appliances and more from over 360 vendors and 650 booths. Since the market takes place in Lots A & B, please respect the barricades and make alternative plans for parking if you have classes, practice or need to use the electric vehicle chargers on the
first Saturday of the month. You can find more information on the Flea Market website.
Silicon Valley Reads Kickoff Is this Wednesday
The Silicon Valley Reads kickoff, sponsored by De Anza, is this Wednesday, Jan. 31, in the VPAC. Silicon Valley Reads is an annual community reading campaign that hosts a variety of events centered around a specific theme. This year’s theme
– "A Greener Tomorrow Starts Today" – focuses on books and activities that highlight environmental sustainability.
The event will start at 7 p.m. and will feature four writers and activists whose work aligns with this year’s theme. Please register to attend in person or to watch the livestream through the Commonwealth Club of Silicon Valley. A companion art exhibit, “Sacred Terrain,” will be open for viewing in the Euphrat Museum of Art from 6-7 p.m. and after the program until 9 p.m. Admission is free for both the event and the museum.
Highlights
Alum Receives Oscar Nomination
Film/TV alum Sean Wang has been nominated for an Oscar in the Documentary Short Film category for his film “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó” (paternal grandma and maternal grandma). The film also received the Grand Jury Prize
and Audience Award for Documentary Short at the 2023 South by Southwest Film Festival. Over the weekend, Wang’s first feature film, “Dìdi,” received the Audience Award
in the U.S. Dramatic category at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Wang graduated from De Anza in 2014 and from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts in 2016.

Humanities Department Receives National Endowment
The Humanities Department received its first National Endowment for the Humanities grant, which will provide $150,000 over three years in in support of oral history projects that highlight marginalized voices. The endowment was announced this month and will help the department focus on three main avenues for collecting stories from the Santa Clara Valley.
The first of these is modernizing more than 400 existing stories in the California History Center with help from student interns in the Humanities Mellon Scholars program. The second pathway involves project director and Humanities chair Lori Clinchard – who will work with other faculty members to create digital story-telling and oral history workshops.
Lastly, the department with partner with instructors Mae Lee and Francesca Caparas for “Asian American Story-Telling in the Santa Clara Valley,” Pride Center faculty coordinator Jamie Pelusi for “The Pride Project,” and instructor Steve Nava and retired history center director Tom Izu for “Spaces of Belonging” – a project centering around Asian, Black and Latinx activists and elders.

Click the De Anza CONNECT tile on the MyPortal apps page or submit your question through their online system.
New FAFSA for 2024-25
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been improved and streamlined for 2024-25. There are some important changes that you’ll want to know about, if you’re applying for financial aid for next year
– including a new deadline to apply for Cal Grants. You can find information about the changes, plus helpful tips and videos, by visiting

University Pathway Scholarships
Remember to check Academic Works for scholarships that can help you pay for school! The University Pathway Scholarship awards $3,000 each quarter, for up to three years, to selected De Anza students who are planning to transfer to a university. Find more information, including a complete list of scholarships, and submit an application at fhda.academicworks.com.
