Upcoming Events

Music Department Concerts This Sunday

There will be a Music Department concert this Sunday, March 17, in the Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) at 4:30 p.m. The Chamber Orchestra, Chorale and Vintage Singers will perform the works of Handel. Admission is $5 for students and $10 for the general public.

Disability Justice Events Continue

Office of Equity logoLearn more about disability support, justice and allyship at multiple events today through next week. These sessions will explore different resources at De Anza, showcase student voices and provide the history of important topics relating to disability. This series is supported by the Office of Equity, Association of Classified Employees (ACE), Disability Support Programs and Services, Pride Center, DASG and Office of College Life. “Searching for Justice: Life After Lockup” Film Screening Tomorrow

Searching for Justice: silhouette of perston standing at sunsetJoin Rising Scholars, the Equity and Engagement Division and the Office of Professional Development for a film screening tomorrow – Wednesday, March 13 – of the PBS NewsHour documentary “Searching for Justice: Life After Lockup.” The film focuses on the many challenges individuals face after incarceration, from reconnecting with family to finding work and staying out of jail.

The screening will be followed by a panel of students, alumni, faculty members, staff and administrators who will share their experiences with incarceration and the criminal justice system. Stop by the Multicultural Center activity area from 1:30-3:30 p.m. to learn how you can help formerly incarcerated and otherwise justice-impacted students. The event is open to all and refreshments will be provided. Employees can earn PGA by attending the event.

Taste of History Is Next Saturday, March 23

Diana Gameros: woman in white playing guitar outdoorsThe annual "A Taste of History" benefit will be held next Saturday, March 23, from 4-7 p.m. This special event is hosted by the California History Center and the Euphrat Museum of Art and will take place in the VPAC on campus.

Poet Meesha Goldberg will speak about the importance of the arts and humanities, and musician Diana Gameros will perform original and Mexican classic songs at the event.

Meesha Goldberg: woman painting muralAttendees can also view the accompanying “All My Relations” and “Sacred Terrain” exhibits. Proceeds from ticket sales will support after-school art classes for at-risk youth and De Anza student multimedia projects.

Honors and Awards

La Voz Students Honored as "Pacesetters"

De Anza students took home a stack of awards after attending a national college journalism conference in La Jolla – including a Pacesetter Award for print media, recognizing the La Voz student newspaper for its work. The La Voz staff also won newspaper and online General Excellence awards; an eighth-place honor in the national “Best of Show” award from the Associated Collegiate Press; and 33 other awards in various categories sponsored by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges and the California College Media Association – including six for work completed during “on-the-spot” contests held at the Associated Collegiate Press Spring National College Media Conference on March 7-9.

2024 Excellence Award Winners

Excellence Awards: hands clappingCongratulations to this year's winners of Excellence Awards from the national League for Innovation in the Community College. Four De Anza employees are being recognized for their outstanding service to the college and its students. The recipients include Diana Argabrite, Euphrat Museum programs coordinator; Brandon Gainer, Communication Studies instructor and department scheduler; Nazy Galoyan, dean of Enrollment Services; and Patty Guitron, General Counseling faculty member, co-coordinator of Guided Pathways and vice president of the Academic Senate. Highlights

Scholarship for Santa Clara County Transfer Students

The Jim McEntee Legacy Scholarship is now accepting applications for its $2,000 award. Santa Clara County community college students who are transferring as juniors to a four-year college this fall are eligible to apply. Students who have faced obstacles in pursuing education are especially encouraged to apply. The application is open from now until May 12. The scholarship has been awarded in memory of Jim McEntee, the executive director of the Santa Clara County Office of Human Relations, for over 27 years.

Donations Wanted for Denim Day Event

jeans on clotheslineYou can help with efforts to prevent sexual violence and substance abuse. Student Health Services is seeking donations of old denim jeans and new or used white T-shirts for its annual Denim Day Clothesline Project. Anyone is welcome to drop off a donated item at the Student Health Services office on the lower level of the Campus Center, before the event on Tuesday, April 23.

Students will decorate and redesign these items during the event, which will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Main Quad. Denim Day will include free food and prizes, including a chance to win a pair of AirPods for the best decorations or designs. For more information, visit deanza.edu/healthservices/events.

Planetarium Eclipse Glasses for Sale

eclipse sunglassesThe De Anza Planetarium will begin selling special eclipse glasses in anticipation of the total eclipse on Monday, April 8. The gift shop will be open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., starting today, March 13. The gift shop will also be open Saturday, April 6, from 1:30-8 p.m. and the morning of Monday, April 8.
