Student Contest

Jim Luotto Literature Prize for Student Essays

Jim LuottoStudents who have written essays in a De Anza English course during the past year may be eligible for the Jim Luotto Literature Prize, which grants awards to students in the range of $100-300. The prize is given in memory of Jim Luotto, who taught literature at De Anza for over 30 years.

To be eligible, students’ essays must be an analysis of literary text and must be between three to 10 pages long. Please submit your essay, along with a cover letter, by Saturday, June 1, at 11:59 p.m. to Julie Pesano at pesanojulie@deanza.edu. Prize winners will also have their essays published in the student edition of the Red Wheelbarrow – the college’s literary magazine. Student Awards

Student Leadership Award Nominations Due This Sunday

DASG logoVIDA and DASG invite you to nominate a student leader for the Student Leadership Awards, which recognizes students who have exhibited extraordinary leadership on or off campus. All De Anza student leaders are eligible and you may nominate yourself or someone else. Please send your nominations by this Sunday, May 19. Recipients of the award will be honored in the commencement program and at the Student Leadership Recognition Gala on Wednesday, June 5.


Events This Week

Euphrat Student Art Show and Awards Ceremony

On Target 1The De Anza Student Art Show will be exhibited in the Euphrat Museum on campus Tuesday through Thursday, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., until June 6. It will also be open Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. during the Flea Market. The exhibit is also open to tour groups by appointment – please call 408.864.5464 to schedule. The photo adjacent to this paragraph, “On Target 1” by Jay Gall, is one of the works on display.

The Euphrat will also be holding a Student Reception and Awards Ceremony this Wednesday, May 15, from 4-5:30 p.m., in the VPAC.

Park-It Market Open House Tomorrow

Park-It MarketWest Valley Community Services is hosting a Park-It Market open house tomorrow – Tuesday, May 14 – from 2-3 p.m. The Park-It Market is a mobile food pantry that will be on campus, in front of the Registration and Student Services building. West Valley Community Services regularly visits campus on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month with their mobile food pantry. Learn more at deanza.edu/resources/food-pantry/

Third Annual UndocuSTEM Conference This Friday

Undocu-STEM logoThe third annual UndocuSTEM Conference will take place this Friday, May 17, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in Conference Rooms A&B. This year’s theme is “Dream in Action,” which helps support the conference’s goal of highlighting pathways for students to pursue STEM careers. You can attend a career panel and workshops on entrepreneurship, nursing, medical careers, school pathways and more. There will also be a traditional Peruvian dance from Escuela de Danzas Dones y Talentos. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Find more information about UndocuSTEM at deanza.edu/hefas/undocustem.


Next Week

Mini Flea Market Next Tuesday

row of fancy cowboy bootsDASG will be hosting a Mini Flea Market in the Main Quad next Tuesday, May 21, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Discover an array of items from local vendors, including vintage clothes, jewelry, and more. This event is open to all students and employees. There will also be exciting performances from the Music and Volunteering Association, the K-Pop Dance Club and 4 Elements hip-hop club.

2024 Ethnic Studies Summit

students in front of Multicultural CenterThe 2024 Ethnic Studies Summit will take place Wednesday, May 22, from 11:30 a.m.-3:20 p.m. in the Multicultural Center (MCC). The event is a reflection on the history and impact of ethnic studies at De Anza.

Activities will include Afro-Columbian drumming, a keynote speech from Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales, a student panel, and a community wisdom panel featuring guests Rose Amador-LeBeau, Gerardo Loera, Ruben Elias Canedo Sanchez and Andres Rodríguez. Lunch will be provided. You can RSVP and find more information on the event website.

“Chinatown Rising” Events Next Week

Two events next week will focus on “Chinatown Rising,” a film by Harry and Josh Chuck, as part of the "Vibrant Communities" program of the Asian American and Asian Studies Department. Next Thursday, May 23, you can attend a Q&A session with Josh Chuck in the Multicultural Center and next Saturday, May 25, you can join a walking tour of San Francisco’s Chinatown. The tour is limited to 25 people, so please RSVP in advance. Transportation will not be provided.

Graduation Update

Graduation Packs Now Available

smiling young woman in cap and gown with flower leisYou can now purchase Graduation Packs – which include a cap, gown, tassel and diploma cover – and affinity stoles at the De Anza Bookstore, online or in-store. Orders can be shipped to the store on campus or to your home.

You must order by June 14 in order to receive your items in time for Graduation on Saturday, June 29. If you need financial assistance in purchasing a gown, email Chelsey Taniguchi at taniguchichelsey@deanza.edu with your name and CWID. Find more information and updates at deanza.edu/graduation.
