StartUpPalooza Is Tomorrow, Oct. 29

The De Anza Innovation Center will be holding StartUpPalooza in Forum 1 tomorrow, Oct. 29, from 3-5 p.m. Nine student teams will be presenting their business pitch in a competition for $750. Although the participants have already been chosen, everyone is welcome to attend the event and watch the pitches. StartUpPalooza is co-sponsored by the Business, Computer Science and Applied Technologies Division, Jared Finegold and the Silicon Valley Labratory.

De Anza Will Host Silicon Valley Reads Kickoff

Silicon Valley Reads: Empowering Humanity: Technology for a Better WorldDe Anza is once again proud to host the Silicon Valley Reads kickoff on Thursday, Jan. 30, in the VPAC. Silicon Valley Reads is an annual community reading campaign that hosts a variety of events centered around a specific theme. This year’s theme is "Empowering Humanity: Technology for a Better World," which will focus on the future of technology, including artificial intelligence, and its potential to create a more equitable society.

The event will be moderated by Sal Pizarro, a Mercury News columnist, and will feature a panel of authors. The discussion can be viewed for free in person or online via streaming.


Honors and Achievements

De Anza Receives $800,000 to Help Reduce Textbook Costs

De Anza has received a $800,000 grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) program to develop zero-cost degree pathways and Open Educational Resource (OER) courses. The majority of the grant will be used to create zero cost pathways to earning associate degrees for transfer in Mathematics, Kinesiology and Political Science.

Special thanks to Danielle Altman, Burcak Artun Semere Bairu, Doli Bambhania, Gorkem Ermut, Rani Fischer, Rusty Johnson, Shagun Kaur, Lisa Mesh, Jim Nguyen, Vinh Nguyen,, Cheryl Owiesny, Lakshmikanta Sengupta, Susmita Sengupta, Neelam Shukla, Danny Tran, Jyothsna Viswanadha, William Wilson and Fatemeh Yarahmadi for making this possible.

The rest of the grant will be used to convert classes into ZTC or OER courses. These include all four Meteorology courses, led by Alicia Mullens; two Astronomy courses, led by Caitlin Kepple and Rachel Mastrapa; and one Nutrition course, led by Barbara Liechty.

The grant will be coordinated by Shagun Kaur, Communications Studies instructor and ZTC Grants coordinator.

La Voz Staff Win Journalism Awards

De Anza journalism students took home 27 awards from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges annual NorCal Regional Conference, held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at San Francisco State University. The honors included 25 awards for work published during the 2023-24 school year, plus two awards earned by Carolyn Zhao and Frank Meyers for work produced in on-the-spot competitions during the conference.
