Beach Volleyball Gate Entry

The campus facilities committee asked for feedback and approval of the gateway that will enter the new beach volleyball courts. Mahato presented the attached designs, which included two options, noting that Dean Mendoza, Ronn Hannon, Dawnis Guevara and Dr. Holmes were included during the process and in the initial review.

Classified Professionals Vision to Encourage Participation in Shared Governance and Leadership Committees Update

This agenda item was tabled to the May 18, 2023 Meeting.

Caring Campus

Holmes noted ongoing conversations on how De Anza can work with classified to empower participation. Caring Campus is an initiative through the Institute for Evidence-based change (IEBC) that looks at how to work with classified professionals to impact student success, student retention and address campus culture. Upon acceptance, De Anza was assigned an IEBC coach, administrators had to go through a 2-hour workshop/training session prior to a 4-hour session with classified professionals. Managers were asked to provide at least one individual that could participate in this initiative. There are 35 classified professionals who have signed up to participate so far. Jaeger- Balm asked for this item to be brought back at the next meeting when Mieso and Garcia are present. There were some concerns about classified senate not knowing much about the initiative, Holmes noted that Mieso communicated with and received endorsements from classified senate prior to moving forward with this initiative.

Measure G Megaproject

Holmes’ hope is to Solidify the membership of the taskforce. Once the group is established, Holmes would like to meet with the group to share and discuss feedback and ideas. Holmes will be giving an update of the establishment of the taskforce and discussions happening at the May 8 Board of Trustees meeting.

The Taskforce membership was discussed as follows:

Lockwood noted that there was some confusion regarding the membership and will be going back to Classified Senate to make sure membership is correct.

Students:

• Isaac Tsang
• Amy Huang (through end of spring)

Huang noted that students are interested but would like to know the time of meetings prior to committing. Holmes noted that typically the time of meetings is often chosen after the group comes together. Huang agreed with the suggestion of inviting Tsang to the first meeting and once a timeline is established more students can be added/included. Huang will attend through the end of spring semester in the meantime. Huang to communicate with senate that this is summer work and the hope for student input over the summer.

There was discussion regarding student shared drive for communication, onboarding, and point of contact.

A meeting with the taskforce and Holmes to be scheduled.

Holmes asks that the taskforce brings updates to College Council.

Mahato reminded all that there is a board study session for the entire bond program on May 8, 2023.

Presidential Update

Holmes will be selecting individuals for the Presidential Service Awards to recognize individuals for the great work they do.

April 29 is enrollment day and asks folks attend and add to their calendars. The event has been advertised extensively, email was sent to graduating Fremont High School students and has been promoted through social media, there is an rsvp form. Tours to include village spaces and application workshops, all is in progress.

End-of-year celebrations: Holmes asks attendees to speak with constituency groups to attend and support these events.

Holmes noted the lack of attendance from faculty and staff at the Graduation Ceremony last year. This year, it will be at the Santa Clara Convention Center, and asks attendees to encourage members of their constituencies to attend, for the students who truly deserve the applause. The communications team is working on getting information out. The ceremony will be on July 1, 2023, after finals week.

New mascot is still in progress and hope is that it arrives in time for Graduation.

Report-outs from Governance Teams

DASG: Elected General Election: New executives, elected part 1 of new officers- expected by end of next week. For 5 positions there were over 30 applicants. They have developed a canvas course that trains senators on best practices and shared governance.

EAC: Deadline for nominations for the Equity Champion award has been extended to Friday, April 21 and can still submit over the weekend via the Online Nomination Form available at deanza.edu/gov/eac/champions/

DALA: Planning end-of-year ceremony which will be June 23. Fundraisers to follow, please support. 

FA: No updates from Faculty Association at this time.

Holmes: Has been working with the Rotary Club of Cupertino for the Year of the Rabbit project, the rabbit forms came in this week and had the opportunity to see some of them. There will be 11 rabbits spread across campus. Arts on Campus have selected artists to paint the rabbits. Look forward to this in the next month or so. Because this is the Year of the Rabbit, Holmes noted that as a campus this would be a nice statement to participate and promote diversity and inclusion.

BSFA: Will give update on Black Graduation once more information is gathered.
