DASB finance committee is interviewing budgeters who will allocate the budget for 2021-2022

Social Justice Creation Stories Edmundo Norte, Deans of IIS, facilitated this team building exercise to examine the roots of the committee core values as a foundation to build a framework for shared governance for IPBT.

The activity that Edmundo had for us was: “In five minutes tell the story of how your values around social justice and equity were created; all of the various influences that contribute to the core values you hold even as they continue to evolve.”

We broke up into triads in the Zoom breakout rooms. Each person in the triad had five minutes to tell the creation story of their values around social justice: birth order, where we grew up geographically, dynamics/experiences in early childhood and all the things that shaped the way we understand the world and that gave meaning to our sense of justice and equity. By understanding what each other’s experiences are we can understand what each other’s recommendations and decisions might be.

As all came back to the main group Edmundo’s question to all was: “How was it for you to contribute to this activity?” Responses included: “Very rewarding”, “Enjoyable”, “Connecting as humans”, “Healing”, “Humanizing”, “Empathy”, ”Connection”. Institutional structures we build need to honor connection. Space to connect at this level needs to be built into our meetings. Edmundo instructed the team that we should strive to express ourselves authentically and honestly in a manner that honors the full humanity of the other person, and we need to strive to learn to listen in a way that is not just listening to the arguments but listen to the heart of what the other person wants.
