Meeting Prerequisites

(For Dual Enrollment Students)

Here are some ways that you can satisfy a prequisite requirement if you haven't taken the prerequisite course.

NOTE This process may take several weeks, so be sure to allow plenty of time by applying for admission and submitting your high school permission form as early as possible.

Advanced Placement Scores

  • De Anza accepts AP exam scores of 3 or higher for certain subjects.
  • Visit the Evaluation Team's Prerequisite Clearance webpage to learn how to request consideration for  your AP exam score.
  • AP courses are not accepted for prequisites. You must have taken the AP exam.

Credit From Another College

  • De Anza will accept course credit earned at other accredited U.S. colleges.
  • Visit the Evaluation Team's Prerequisite Clearance webpage to learn how to request consideration for your previously earned college course credit. 

Computer Science 

English

  • We use an assessment process to place students in certain English courses, such as EWRT 1A or EWRT 1A + LART 250.
  • If you are planning to take English or Math courses, or any course that has an English or Math prerequisite, you should start by checking your English and Math placements in MyPortal. 
    • Log in to MyPortal > Click on the Student Registration card > Look under My Records and click on View My Placement Results
    • You will see instructions for any action you need to take.

Math

  • We use an assessment process to place students in certain Math courses (up to MATH 1A).
  • If you are planning to take English or Math courses, or any course that has an English or Math prerequisite, you should start by checking your English and Math placements in MyPortal. 
    • Log in to MyPortal > Click on the Student Registration card > Look under My Records and click on View My Placement Results
    • You will see instructions for any action you need to take.

Science: Biology or Chemistry

  • You can take a science assessment exam to see if you're eligible to take BIOL 6A, BIOL 40A or CHEM 1A without completing the prerequisite course.

World Languages

  • You can find special instructions for satisfying a World Language prerequisite by visiting the World Languages website
