    College Council Faculty Hiring Update

The five positions recommended by SSPBT were approved by College Council in the February 17, 2022 meeting. The staffing requisitions are currently being entered and the hiring process will begin.

    • Yi-Baker asked how positions are approved and funded, in reference to a new position that had opened up in the Chancellor’s office.
      • Mieso explained that there wasn’t a uniform District process. Each college has its own shared governance process and new positions for Student Services at De Anza go through SSPBT. The Chancellor’s office positions do not go through a college shared governance process. Historically, funds have been allocated on a 60/40 split between the two colleges (60% De Anza and 40% Foothill), which also applies to budget reductions, and the Chancellor’s office and Central Services have their own funding. The budget allocation model is currently being reviewed.

    SSPBT Priorities - Data Overview

Mieso explained that the SSPBT Priorities are part of the Institutional Metrics and that we need to understand where we are to see where we need to be. In our subsequent meetings we will look at what we are currently doing and what we can do in Student Services to improve.

Lisa Ly was invited to SSPBT to review the data associated with the SSPBT Core Priorities to assist us in this process:

    1. Student Equity
    2. Access to Education
    3. Student Retention
    4. Student Completion

The data in the presentation was pulled from the Strategic Planning webpage that is being managed by the College Planning Committee. The data includes the Core Priorities in regards to racial/ethnic groups, special populations that are served by student services such as CalWORKs, Foster Youth, DSPS, Veterans, and EOPS, etc.

    1. Student Equity: course success rates have increased from 76% to 80% over the past 9 years, and all ethnic groups have seen an increase in their success rate. However, large gaps still remain.
    2. Access to Education: the proportion of each ethnic group has remained rather stable as enrollment decreased overall, suggesting that one racial/ethnic group was not under enrolling.
      1. Enrollment for the five populations served by student services has decreased over the past 9 years with the greatest percent decline for CalWORKs.
    3. Student Retention: the rate at which students continue on their education path, on average, from fall to winter is 75% and from fall through spring is 69%.
    4. Student Completion: there has been an overall shift toward Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) as more ADT degrees have become available to students.

    • Hyon Chu had a question about the transfer numbers to the UCs and CSUs. The research office relies on the information provided by the UCs and the CSUs and they report transfer data differently. The rates reflected in the presentation show students who have been admitted. Historically, we have had more students admitted to the CSUs than the UCs. CSUs don’t release the data on the number of students who applied and then were admitted but the UCs do. The numbers presented are all for De Anza only.
      • Another question was regarding the transfer rates. These numbers reflect the students who intend to transfer based on the information they enter into the system such as their educational goal. Less than half of our students transfer but not all students want to or intend transfer.

    • Mieso asked how De Anza transfer rates compare to the state transfer rates. Ly could not provide actual numbers at this time but De Anza transfer rates are above the state average.

    • Avila asked if data has been collected and reviewed regarding the numbers during the pandemic. One example provided by Balducci was the DSPS numbers that are down specifically due to the pandemic.
      • Ly responded that some online surveys have gone out, as recently as fall 2021, to see how students are faring during the pandemic and what their preferences are. Students prefer the flexibility of online classes but also like the option of coming on campus for specific kinds of classes and programs.

    • Brown also asked about the student survey data and if they could correlate any of the responses with a specific group or gender from the open-ended questions.
      • Ly responded that the most current numbers are not available as of yet but our numbers are better than the state average in regards to transfer in racial/ethnic groups. Also, by isolating the open-ended responses by racial/ethnic groups, the counts were too low to properly represent the group(s).

Mieso thanked Ly for presenting today and many committee members agreed how helpful and informative the presentation was and how easy it was to understand. The presentation provided information on what we are doing well but also the gaps that need improvement.
